HOLY BASIL!

Ever feel like you can’t seem to catch up with life? Well, I can definetly relate. Although I would love to take all stress and anxiety out of my patients lives (and my own), I am also realistic that sometimes life just happens and all we can do is support our body from this inevitable stress in the best way possible. One of my favorites ways to do this is to use powerful botanical herbs. One of my favorites is Holy Basil (Ocimum teniflorum) a  2,000 year old plant native to India. This amazing herb known as “tulsi, the Queen of Herbs”  has been a prominent herb in ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

Not only is this herb powerful in medicine but it was traditionally considered sacred and holy and was often used in religious ceremonies as well as it was considered protective energetically.  The plant was often placed in homes to ward off disease as well as it was used as a natural bug repellent.

Holy Basil, which has many health benefits, has powerful  medicinial benefits found in its leaves. The leaves of a Holy Basil plant are considered to contain adaptogenic properities. Properties that help supports the body from stress. This anti- stress herb has been used for many conditions including anxiety, adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism as well as a home remedy against acne.

Although used traditionally, this ancient medicinal plant has now been researched by modern medicine and has been shown to have pharmacological effects on many systems in our body including the immune system, reproductive system, cardiovascular system, GI tract as well as urinary tract. These modern high-tech tools have allowed us to measure the therapeutic benefits of Holy Basil in a way previously unknown.  This ancient herb has been found to help protect organs and tissues against chemical stress from environmental pollutants, heavy metals as well as chronic physical and mental stress.

Holy Basil works by supporting the body’s response to stress and helping support our natural ability to cope with anxiety and stress.  This mechanism helps lower our cortisol (stress hormone), naturally.
